Being a dog, I thought every day was Dog Day. But I understand that humans talk about the Dog Days of Summer as being the 40 days beginning July 3rd. and ending August 11th. This coincides with the dawn rising of Sirius, the dog star. How about that, we dogs have a star! It is also associated with the hottest time of the year. In fact, going back to ancient Romans who called the hottest and most humid days “dies caniculares”, translated – dog days.
There are many superstitions that surround Dog Days. Some animals are supposed to go mad during this time. As hot as it gets, I guess that may be the reason behind that myth, especially in the days before air conditioning. Storms are suppose to be worse during this time. I know for me, when those storms come with their loud boom booms, I protect my humans from under the bed.
Some humans thought that catching a cold during this time could easily develop into pneumonia. Bites from mosquitos would easily become infected. And scratches, especially by cats, would more likely leave a scar. I knew there was something evil about those cats.
Some believed that if you walked barefooted outside after a rain you would get “ground itch” which would cause an infection that would turn gangrene. I don’t know what that is but I bet it is something caused by squirrels.
All I can say is that I’m happy to be a house dog. Staying inside where it is cool during these hot and humid days. For you humans lucky enough to have a fur baby, there are important things to remember about us. Remember, we don’t speak your language, so you must watch us and know our mannerisms to keep us safe and comfortable.
- Never leave us in a car, it gets deadly hot very fast.
- We love going on walks, but this is best in the morning before the heat of day.
- Water, water, water. Please be sure we have access to plenty of fresh, clean water. We need to keep hydrated. Did you notice we have fur?
- Even dogs like me with long fur should not be shaved close during the summer. Our fur gives us a measure of insulation from the heat.
- Some breeds are less tolerant of heat than others. Be sure you know what may affect your particular pet’s breed.
- If you take us on a trip and we will be outside for awhile, check your pet store for an ice vest that will help keep us cool.
- Keep us in shade during outings, maybe building a tent to keep us out of the sun.
- Consider having a wading pool for your dogs, but please keep it clean.
- When we go for a walk, remember that sidewalks and roads get very hot. You try walking on them without shoes and see hot it feels!
I mentioned that the ending of the classic Dog Days is August 11th. We know that it stays hot much longer. It is still summer time and a popular time for humans to go on vacation. I found out that my humans are soon starting a trip WITHOUT ME. They are going on something called a cruise. And they are taking two of the grandkids.
I heard Warren talking about the non stop availability of food on a cruise. Now that is right up on my dream list. Food in the morning, food in the afternoon, food at supper time! Oh what a joy! Wait, he just told me I would be staying with my human sister and her dog Izzie. Ok, Izzie and I love to be together, so all is well. I know my humans will be posting on here about their cruise adventure while Izzie and I have lots of doggie fun.
Until next time, I wish you doggie kisses.
